Birds in Bangladesh
It’s
really hard trying to identify Bengali birds– local books often have
the wrong names, and Western books don’t have the Bengali names. Today
for my morning off I decided to research what Bengali and English names
go with what bird. I’ve seen all of these birds below, they’re pretty
common. Some of the photos are ours, but others are borrowed.

A type of Cuckoo/কোকিল also known as the Hawk-Cuckoo, this is the bird that makes the endlessly repeated tripe call, becoming more frenzied as it rises higher and higher (listen here) Banglapedia: The very name Bau-Kotha-Kou indicates the bereavement call of a husband to his dearest wife. People believe that the bird is the incarnation of that saddened husband. For many people, the name ‘Kokil‘ will conjure a symbol of spring.
